My name is Joon J. Lee. I have been a professional artist since the early 90s. I hold an MFA in painting from Pratt Institute. I have artwork that are part of both private and corporate collections and have participated in both group and solo exhibitions when I was working in NYC for 15 years. I have been living quietly and pursuing my artistic personal best in the New Haven area since returning to the town I grew up in since 2011. I’d like to once again share my reflections with the world.
I am primarily a formalist painter who uses oil and mixed media. Painting has been a continuous series of self-portraits that have documented my evolution as an artist. It has been the ever-present source of great pain and salvation. It is what I do. It is what I am: my identity that is in constant transformation as I adapt to the synthesis of aesthetics, artistic progression, statement, and human events. Over the last decade, my work has reflected where I stand as an older artist and person of more depth and grounded opinions with a stronger hold of craft and the ability to abandon all of it. Reinvention of process and content piece by piece is my primary motivation. We are in constant motion. Change and transformation are both the muse and creator.
